Sunny Yellow Daffodils

 I have about two dozen daffodils in bloom now. Today was warmer though windy. Whether the flowers will survive the wind and the colder temperatures of Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday remains to be seen. I snipped a few daffodils to bring inside so I will have something to enjoy if the others suffer harm.

With the vase of daffodils on the dining table, I moved the Easter lily and the Godiva bunnies to the sunroom.

The lily blooms are starting to open and heavily perfume the air.

Speaking of bunnies, I visited our new Rural King store this morning. It had a mini Rex of brown and white and a white rabbit that wiggled its cute pink nose at me. This store reminds me of Big R which closed down in our town. Rural King is in the old K-Mart building. We have had quite a few business closures the past few years: Hallmark store, K-Mart, Pier One, Carson's, Ace Hardware, Big R (though it was purchased by R and P--I have yet to go into that store).

I knew from the ads that they had baby chickens in Rural King. The store painted yellow chicken feet on the floor to follow to the pullets. There were many tubs but only two had heat lamps. The first tub only had two little chicks, but from the tub across the way I could hear lots of peeping. Yep, that tub had dozens of baby chicks crowded together. I don't know why the two in the first tub had been separated from the others. They looked slightly bigger so maybe they are all that was left from an earlier batch. 

I knew they would put a smile on my face; I haven't had much to smile about lately. The daffodils also perked me up. Sometimes you just have to go out and seek sunshine and smiles.

Getting Ready for Easter

As a girl in California, the special treat at Easter was a See's Candy chocolate egg. If there were a store near me, I might continue the tradition, but alas I must substitute. But I have some good subs. Dark chocolate of course. We will see how the Godiva compares to the Lindt bunny.

Yesterday I bought an Easter lily at Meijer. I tried to find one with unopened blooms. The one I picked out had one bloom just starting to open and another not far behind. This morning they are both open a bit more. I really want to have a plant full of blooms on Easter Sunday, but the timing is always tricky. I really like the patterned purple paper around the pot.

The daffies are opening up now. I had tried to replant some of the bulbs deeper last fall as the winter soil heaving had brought them partially to the surface; but I still have blind daffodils (no blooms) any way. Still it is nice to have a few cheery blooms. Now I will have to keep my eyes on the tulip plants in the neighborhood so I will know when to visit Peabody Retirement Community again for its multitude of flowers. Probably not until May this year.

Our roller coaster weather goes from 70 one day to 45-50 the next. The ten-day forecast even shows the chance for light snow. We have sat in our sunroom twice for lunch in the past week and a half with the patio door ajar to hear the bird sounds. Too windy to sit on the porch yet. 

I don't buy an Easter outfit each year like I did as a child and teen. No matter what the weather is like that day, I can just pick something out of the closet that is suitable. I am going to Fort Wayne on Friday and will look for a Springy top or blouse, but not with the idea of an Easter outfit.

In the past few weeks I have arrived at the library to find plastic bags of books one time and three boxes of books another time. The bags held large-print fiction books. The lady who was donating 8 Love Inspired books each month has stopped. I moved the non-fiction large-print books (about two dozen) to the countertop next to the Love Inspired books. That was the only way to have room for the fiction gifts. I am almost done cataloging them.

Most of the books in the boxes duplicated what we have; there were maybe a dozen keepers. I have my book truck shelves double-rowed I have so many books to process. I am busy with other things and unmotivated to spend time in the library other than to shelve returned books. It may be several weeks to clear off the book truck. I have a tablecloth draped over the truck because in spite of a sign saying not to remove items, they were disappearing. The cloth doesn't quite cover the bottom shelf. Sure enough, a book from there is gone. There are also grimy fingerprints on the tablecloth where somebody eating in the library decided they needed to explore. It is what it is. The library is accessible 24 hours a day; no way to monitor what happens.

Spring Inside At Least

Our forecast for today was for snow and gusty winds. The winds are here, but the snow if it comes won't be until tonight. Right now around 2 p.m. it is 39 degrees. The crazy Indiana weather will turn into 70 degrees Sunday. I talked with my neighbor behind me this morning. She said when she started walking her dog, it stopped and stared at my patio. My husband had leaned the bird feeder against his storage box as it often blows over in high wind. The dog knew something was different and not quite right she said.

I created my own spring inside by buying some plants. They are starting to open.

My daffodils outside are starting to bloom; hope this cold weather doesn't zap the flowers and kill them before they open up all the way.

Getting ready to start a jigsaw puzzle that looks like spring, too. It's a big one; usually I prefer less than 1000 pieces these days. It's a good day to stay inside.

Deer Candy

Earlier this week we had several cold nights/early mornings. They nipped a few of the crocus. I had enjoyed the blooms for about 2 weeks; I told my husband Wednesday to remove the board we had been using to cover the crocus at night. Sure enough, Thursday the flowers had all been eaten by the deer. The deer received their Easter candy early.

 I am enjoying my indoor blooms though.

The pink tulips were mostly closed when I bought them Thursday. Today (Saturday) they are opening up. The bowl of wooden eggs were made by  my husband out of a variety of wood species. They are remarkably light weight given they are of wood.

Last night the Grace Village choir (to which I belong), presented a lovely Good Friday service of sacred music and narrative. There were several hymns in which the congregation joined. It seemed to touch people’s hearts and put us into the right frame to praise God for his great sacrifice and tomorrow for the joy of resurrection.

My Easter lily had two partially opened blooms when I bought it over a week ago. Slowly, day by day, more have been opening. Just one left to open, and it looks like that will happen tomorrow. All of the lilies celebrating Christ’s resurrection together.
