Narrow Escape

I spent this morning clearing off the top shelves of my bottom kitchen cupboards and the counters as well. Tomorrow an installer of new countertops was to show up at 8:30 a.m., and he needs to be able to reach under the counter to do his job.

Now there has been a change in plans. This afternoon the company called to let us know the installer tested positive for COVID today! We will be traveling by airplane soon and having to quarantine for exposure would have created a big mess. We thank God for His protection.

The cases in our county have decreased in the past few days. However, the cases of employees and now residents at Grace Village are increasing.

Simple Days

With the risks of the surging pandemic and the cold January days, I don't get out much anymore. Winter blows its frigid breath on me, and I cringe. I did go to Walmart for some printer ink; kept a mask on the whole time I was in the store.

I am playing a new online game Wordle. You try to guess the 5-lettered word in 6 tries. The response of green tells you the letter is in the correct place; yellow means it is part of the word but in the wrong place; gray means the letter is not part of the word. You have to input a legitimate word in your tries not just gibberish. On my tablet the displayed keyboard is visible the entire time which helps me remember what doesn't work. My first try I figured out the correct word in 3 attempts; I thought this isn't too bad. Today after struggling for a long time I finally came up with the word on the 6th try. You don't have to download an app, but it tracks you somehow (cookies?) as it keeps tabs on your wins. So now I have a 2-win streak. There is only one game per day. I play it on my Samsung tablet, but my husband does it on his smartphone.

I read one of my free Wall Street Journal ebooks, The Reading List. It was OK. It helps if you know something about the books used in the novel but not necessary. I can choose one free WSJ ebook per month, plus one free audio book per month from 4 choices. I received a pair of bluetooth earphones for Christmas; I will use them while in Florida so I don't disturb others. I have these freebies plus some books on my Kindle app on my tablet ready to read, but I also have a paperback which I will probably start on the airplane.

Sadly, Grace Village has decided to sell the property that has the workshop building my husband uses regularly. They talk of converting a detached garage on another property to meet the needs of those being displaced. That garage needs a lot of fixing up, including putting in more plugs for the machinery. The current thought is that GV will try to lease the existing workshop from the buyer (property hasn't even been listed yet) for several months and use part of the profit to make the garage useable. It could turn out to be a better place for the guys, but it will take lots of money and effort, including moving the equipment and cabinets. As my husband pointed out he was much younger when they painted and fixed up the current shop; he doesn't have the stamina to do it all over again.

A blog I read each day has a link to a song that reminds us that God does renew us, better days are in store: All Things New by Elaine Hagenberg - YouTube  We need that reminder during these hard days.
