Fort Wayne Japanese Restaurant

Today I had a therapy session in Fort Wayne. My husband drove us there. There is a large lobby as you enter the building with a less busy section around the corner with comfortable chairs. Much quieter and less crowded than the PT waiting room. I finished early and decided to step over to this quiet lobby area to phone my husband. There he was! He had discovered this area also. He was starting to doze off.

We had lunch at Asakusa Japanese Restaurant and Sushi Bar just north of Costco. We had eaten here once before but at least a year ago.

There is a separate large menu for choosing sushi. You fill out an order on a paper left at the table which is taken to the bar so the sushi can be made fresh. We know very little about sushi other than California rolls; we did not order any. Instead, I ordered teriyaki chicken, and my husband ordered a bento box with tempura vegetables, Katsu chicken (panko crusted and fried), and shrimp. We knew our orders included rice, but we did not know broccoli and carrots were part of it. My teriyaki mentioned that the chicken would be on a bed of mushrooms, but my husband also ended up with mushrooms in his box.

The lunch orders included soup. The soup also had mushrooms. They must have a standing order for mushrooms from somebody.

When the waiter came to take away the empty soup bowls, he asked how we liked it. I told him I liked it very much and asked what it was called. He shrugged his shoulders and said, "Clear soup". We joined him in a laugh. Now that I am home and look at the menu on the website, it does say clear soup; but it also describes it as fish-based broth with tempura crumbs, mushrooms, and green onions.

The food was good, but like much Japanese restaurant food it was high in sodium. We were busy gulping down water.

We ended our outing with a stop at Costco. Busy, busy, busy! We did snag a parking spot not too far from the entrance. I dozed off some in the car on the way home. Now, I do not need an afternoon nap.

Sushiko Restaurant

Today we ate at Sushiko restaurant on Detroit Street for the first time. This building has seen so many restaurants through the years; I hope this one is able to stay around. It has a pleasant setting.

The menu has several pages of suishi. My Bento box had 4 pieces of California roll; my husband ordered tuna rolls. He did not think that  they were very good. I gave him one of my rolls because I am not a big fan of suishi. He said it was better than the tuna.

I found the teriyaki chicken with dumplings good. It came with California rolls and fried rice.

Tuna suishi roll with ginger and wasabi.

Shrimp dinner with vegetables that my husband ordered.

The restaurant is on the shore of Center Lake with an outside deck. Not very sunny as we are expecting rain this afternoon. The menu prices for lunch during the week (including Saturday) are quite a savings from the regular menu. We will have to come back on a nice weekday to eat and maybe sit on the deck.

Parasols hung from the ceiling make a colorful decor.

The suishi case at the entrance had a man making more.

There are steps to climb to reach the main entrance; maybe there is a ramp to the deck which would allow one to enter without steps? Not sure.

Saw one couple eating crab rangoon which were large and looked good. For the more adventurous, a variety of suishi. Our meals included salad or soup. We chose the egg drop soup which was tasty.

Worth a second visit on a weekday.

Retirement Rolling Along

It is hard to believe that my husband retired 14 years ago today, and we moved to Indiana from Texas just a few days later. It doesn't seem that long ago, yet at the same time it does seem like our life in Texas was pretty far back.

Yesterday while I had a therapy session in Fort Wayne, my husband did some shopping. At Northcrest mall he browsed Kohl's; then deciding he didn't have enough time to look in other stores, he went to AAA also in Northcrest and visited with the travel agent we used  to book our Panama cruise. She advised him that if he wanted to cruise in winter 2022 he should book soon as the ships are filling up fast. I am not yet comfortable with the idea of cruising. Not so much because of fear of getting sick, but because of the risk of cancellation. The bugs in this new way of doing things on board also need to be worked out.

When he rejoined me, we went to Asakusa for lunch. We have not had much experience with Japanese restaurants. This was a new restaurant for us. We ordered the (Bento) box lunch. For my 2 entrees I selected shrimp and vegetable tempura and teriyaki steak. My husband picked chicken katsu (a sort of breaded and fried chicken tenders) and the Texas roll (sushi). Besides a mound of rice, sauteed mushrooms, and a few carrots and pieces of broccoli, this meal came with soup and salad. The few times I have eaten Japanese soup (miso), I have not been impressed. This soup was not miso. It had mushrooms, green onions, and tempura crumbs. It was delicious. The salad had a ginger dressing. We will have to go back sometime, but in the same strip mall there is in an adjoining building another Japanese restaurant which we will probably try before returning to Asakusa.

I chose this restaurant because it is close to Costco where we needed to stop to buy some hearing aid batteries. It was so hot (upper 80s) and humid, it was wearying just to go from the car to the entrance. We are in a stretch of rainy days. Last Friday we participated in our condo community's garage sale. It rained almost all day and sometimes had downpours. It just started raining now as I am typing this.

Before heading home, we stopped at Ollie's because of the Customer Appreciation week. The extra 15% off wasn't much of a discount, but I bought two books for $7.25.

As long as my eyes work, I will be a reader. That is just a normal part of my retirement life carried over from pre-retirement.
